Multi-product configuration for an Office of Finance client.
There's a lot to consider when upgrading a mixed product environment so it was helpful that we agreed to take a phased approach to the project.
With a change in Cognos versions calling for a complete removal of the existing product, and so necessitating in downtime for the entire platform it seems wise to consider what else can be achieved at the same time by building a complete new platform.
The benefits to this particular client included:
- Upgrading from Windows 2003 to Windows 2012 R2
- Upgrading from SQL Server 2005 to SQL Server 2012 R2
- Allowing a testing period on the new platform before migrating users
So we built a new set of servers and performed a clean installation, migrated the clients data and allowed a two week testing period ahead of a final weekend shutdown of the old production system with migration of data and final sanity checks before the users returned to an upgraded product set on the Monday morning.
